(1741-1827) American artist. He was the head of a large family of painters. His portraits of leading figures in the Revolutionary War include the earliest known portrait of George Washington, painted 1772.
Peale was also a naturalist, interested in paleontology and taxidermy, and an inventor. Five of Peale's 17 children also became painters—Titian Peale (1799–1885), animal painter; Rubens Peale (1784–1865), still-life painter; Raphaelle Peale (1774–1825), still-life and portrait painter; Rembrandt Peale (1778–1860), portrait and history painter; and Franklin Peale (1795–1890), natural history painter. His brother James Peale (1749–1831) and James's daughters were portrait painters and miniaturists.

(1898-) US Methodist leader. Through his radio program and book The Art of Living 1948, he became one of the best-known religious figures in the US. His The Power of Positive Thinking 1952 became a national bestseller. Peale was elected president of the Reformed Church in America in 1969.
Born in Bowersville, Ohio, US, Peale was educated at Ohio Wesleyan University and was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1922. After serving congregations in Brooklyn 1924–27 and Syracuse 1927–32, he became pastor of the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City.
