Third-largest city in South Korea, situated between Seoul and Pusan; Nearby is the Haeinsa Temple, one of the country’s largest monasteries and repository of the Triptaka Koreana, a collection of 80,000 wood blocks on which the Buddhist scriptures are carved. Grain, fruit, textiles, and tobacco are produced.
