City in N Portugal 48 km/30 mi NNE of Pôrto; Industries include textiles, electrical goods, and vehicle manufacture. It has a 12th-century cathedral, and the archbishop is primate of the Iberian peninsula. As Bracara Augusta it was capital of the Roman province Lusitania.
