British national anthem. The melody resembles a composition by John Bull and similar words are found from the 16th century. In its present form it dates from the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, when it was used as an anti-Jacobite Party song.
In the US the song ‘America’, with the first line “My country, ’tis of thee”, is sung to the same tune. Variations on the ‘America’ theme were composed by Charles Ives 1891.

(1930-) French film director. He was one of the leaders of New Wave cinema. His works are often characterized by experimental editing techniques and an unconventional dramatic form. His films include A bout de souffle/Breathless 1959, Vivre sa Vie/It’s My Life 1962, Weekend 1968, Sauve qui peut (la vie)/Slow Motion 1980, and Je vous salue, Marie/Hail Mary 1985.
His other films include Pierrot le fou 1965.
