Es gibt Einzel- und Gruppen-A.en von Künstlern, thematisch, stilistisch, disziplinär, zeitlich, gattungsmäßig oder anderweitig geordnete oder gebundene A.en, periodische A.en wie die Documenta in Kassel, Gedchtnis-A.en, Repräsentations-A.en, usw. Die Kunst-A. ist heute die bedeutendste Form ästhet. Kommunikation und Bildung sowie auch Mittler zw. Produzenten und Konsumenten, Hauptbestandteil des heutigen Kunstmarktes. Das A.wesen bildete sich zuerst in den Niederlanden und in Italien heraus (16./17. Jh.). 1673 erschien in Paris der erste A.katalog. Für Kunstrezeption und Kunstentwicklung spielen A.en in Museen heute eine bed. Rolle. Gegenwartskünstler, weil kaum öffentlich präsentierbar, werden zunehmend in Kunstvereinen und Galerien vorgestellt.
