His plays deal with family relationships and contemporary American values, and include Death of a Salesman 1949 and The Crucible 1953, based on the Salem witch trials and reflecting the communist witch-hunts of Senator Joe McCarthy. He was married 1956–61 to the film star Marilyn Monroe, for whom he wrote the film The Misfits 1960.
Among other plays are All My Sons 1947, A View from the Bridge 1955, After the Fall 1964, based on his relationship with Monroe. (1904-1944) US trombonist and bandleader. He was an exponent of the big-band swing sound from 1938. He composed his signature tune ‘Moonlight Serenade’ (a hit 1939). (1891-1980) US writer. From 1930 to 1940 he lived a bohemian life in Paris, where he wrote his fictionalized, sexually explicit, autobiographical trilogy Tropic of Cancer 1934, Black Spring 1936, and Tropic of Capricorn 1938. They were banned in the US and England until the 1960s.
Born in New York City, Miller settled in Big Sur, California, in 1944 and wrote the autobiographical The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy, consisting of Sexus 1949, Plexus 1949, and Nexus 1957 (published as a whole in the US 1965). Inspired by Surrealism, Miller was a writer of exuberant and comic prose fueled by anarchist passion, and was later adopted as a guru by the followers of the Beat Generation.
