(1911-1982) Chilean president 1964–70. Elected as the only effective anti-Marxist candidate, he pursued a moderate program of “Chileanization” of US-owned copper interests. His regime was plagued by inflation and labor unrest, but saw considerable economic development.
He split with the Conservatives 1938 to help found the Falanga Nacional, an antifascist Social Christian party, which joined forces with the Social Christian Conservatives 1957. He was a shrewd opposition leader, arguing for reform within a democratic framework.
