EISA

imenicaračunariIPA: / eɪsə /

Acronym for Extended Industry Standard Architecture. A bus standard for the connection of add-on cards to a PC motherboard, such as video cards, internal modems, sound cards, drive controllers, and cards that support other peripherals. EISA was introduced in 1988 by a consortium of nine computer industry companies. The companies—AST Research, Compaq, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, NEC, Olivetti, Tandy, Wyse, and Zenith—were referred to collectively as “the Gang of Nine.” EISA maintains compatibility with the earlier Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) but provides for additional features introduced by IBM in its Micro Channel Architecture bus standard. EISA has a 32-bit data path, and it uses connectors that can accept ISA cards. However, EISA cards are compatible only with EISA systems. EISA can operate at much higher frequencies than the ISA bus and provides much faster data throughput than ISA. See also ISA, Micro Channel Architecture.

Eisenhart

muški rodličnoIPA: / aɪzənhart /

(1876-1965)
US theoretical geometrist who formulated a unifying principle to the theory of the deformation of surfaces. In the 1920s he attempted to develop his own geometry theory from that of German mathematician Georg Riemann.
Eisenhart was born in York, Pennsylvania, and studied at Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania, and Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. His life's work in mathematical research was spent at Princeton University 1900–45.
One of Eisenhart’s major achievements was to relate his theories regarding differential geometry to studies bordering on the topological. At the age of 25 he wrote one of the first characterizations of a sphere as defined in terms of differential geometry (the
paper had the somewhat daunting title Surfaces whose first and second forms are respectively the second and first forms of another surface).
The deformation of a surface involves the congruence of lines connecting a point and its image. Eisenhart’s contribution was to realize that, in all known cases, the intersections of these surfaces with the given surface and its image form a set of curves which have special properties. He wrote his account of the theory in 1923, in Transformations of Surface.

He resigned from the army 1952 to campaign for the presidency; he was elected, and reelected by a wide margin in 1956. (1932-) US architect. He came to prominence as a member of the New York Five group, along with Richard Meier and Michael Graves. His work draws on mathematics and philosophy, especially Deconstructionism. Early experiments in complexity, such as House X 1978, have led to increasingly scrambled designs, such as Fin d'Ou T Hou S 1983.
A more recent commission, the Wexner Center for the Visual Arts, Ohio, 1985–90, has enabled him to explore his interest in grids and the concept of “non-building” in a large public project.
