(1853-1906) US architect. He was a cofounder of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. One of the most prominent US architects of the 19th century, he specialized in the Renaissance style and designed, among many famous projects, the original Madison Square Garden and the Washington Square Arch, both in New York City.
A flamboyant and arrogant personality, he was murdered in the rooftop restaurant of Madison Square Garden by the husband of a former lover.

Elected to the US Senate 1891, President Cleveland nominated him as associative justice to the US Supreme Court 1893 and under President Taft he was nominated as chief justice 1911–21. During his office the Court made important decisions on US economic policy as in United States v E C Knight and Co 1895 when he joined the majority in weakening the Sherman Antitrust Act by removing manufacture of goods from its purview.
Born in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, US, White attended Mount St Mary's College (Maryland), the Jesuit College (New Orleans), and Georgetown University, but left his college studies to serve in the Confederate Army. After the American Civil War 1865 he studied law at the University of Louisiana Law School in New Orleans; he was admitted to the bar 1868. Becoming active in Democratic politics, he was elected to the state senate 1874 and was a justice of the Louisiana supreme court 1878–80.

He was a moderate conservative, usually dissenting on the rights of criminals, but upholding the right of accused citizens to trial by jury.
Born in Fort Collins, Colorado, US, White graduated from the University of Colorado 1938. He studied at Oxford University, UK, as a Rhodes scholar 1939 and entered Yale Law School 1940.
He graduated from Yale 1946 after service with the US navy in World War II. He served as deputy attorney general 1961–62, before being appointed to the Supreme Court. He served as law clerk 1946–47 to Supreme Court associate justice Fred M Vinson.
He also played professional football, with the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) 1938 and for the Detroit Lions 1940–41. He was elected to the Football Hall of Fame 1954.
