Province of Argentina; area 99,633 sq km/38,458 sq mi; Its capital is Resistencia, in the SE. The chief crop is cotton, and there is forestry.
It includes many lakes, swamps, and forests, producing timber and quebracho (a type of wood used in tanning). Until 1951 it was a territory, part of Gran Chaco, a great zone, mostly level, stretching into Paraguay and Bolivia. The N of Gran Chaco was the scene of the Chaco War.
