(1897-1957) Austrian-born US composer. He began composing while still in his teens and achieved early recognition when his opera Die tote Stadt/Dead City was premiered simultaneously in Hamburg and Cologne 1920. In 1934 he moved to Hollywood to become a composer for Warner Brothers. His film scores, in richly orchestrated and romantic style, include The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938 and Of Human Bondage 1945.
