Aquatic plant of the family Nymphaeaceae. The fleshy roots are embedded in mud and the large round leaves float on the water. The cup-shaped flowers may be white, pink, yellow, or blue.
The white water lily Nymphaea odorata is common in E North America as is the yellow-flowered spatterdock Nuphar advena. Victoria regia, with leaves about 6 ft/2 m in diameter, occurs in South America.
