Chief ore of lead, consisting of lead sulfide, PbS. It is lead-gray in color, has a high metallic luster and breaks into cubes because of its perfect cubic cleavage. It may contain up to 1% silver, and so the ore is sometimes mined for both metals. Galena occurs mainly among limestone deposits in Australia, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, the UK, and the US.
