A nickname for a native of citizen of New England, especially one descended from old New England stock; by extension, an inhabitant of the Northern States.
Initially, a disparaging term for a Dutch freebooter, later applied to English settlers by colonial Dutch in New York. Now it may be a colloquial term for a New Englander, any US northerner (used in the South), or any American (used outside the US).
