An uncertain region on the east shore of the Adriatic where an ancient Indo-European people once lived.
Ancient name for the eastern coastal region on the Adriatic, N of the Gulf of Corinth, conquered by Philip of Macedon. It became a Roman province AD 9. The Albanians are the survivors of its ancient peoples.
Illyrian works of art include the figurative “Situla art” of the 6th century BC, depicting feasting and games. The Roman province of Illyricum was the birthplace of St Jerome, the scholar.
