Or Concept art, Conceptualism; Style of art, originating in the 1960s in the US, that aims to express ideas rather than create visual images. Its materials include, among others, photographs, written information, diagrams, sound, and video tapes.
Continuing the tradition of Dada and antiart, Conceptual art aims to raise questions about the nature of art by flouting artistic conventions. As well as its theorist Sol LeWitt (1928– ), its practitioners include Joseph Kosuth (1945– ), Allan Krapow, and Bruce Nauman (1941– ).
Conceptual art overlaps with performance art where it uses the human body as a medium for expression; some artists, such as Joseph Beuys, are practitioners of both.
