(born Beatrice Stella Tanner) (1865-1940) English actress. Her roles included Paula in Pinero’s The Second Mrs Tanqueray 1893 and Eliza in Pygmalion, written for her by G B Shaw, with whom she had an amusing correspondence.
(1777-1844) Scottish poet. After the successful publication of his Pleasures of Hope 1799, he traveled in Europe, and there wrote his war poems ‘Hohenlinden’ and ‘Ye Mariners of England’.
(1901-1957) South African poet. He wrote The Flaming Terrapin 1924. His poetry displays technical virtuosity, narrative verve, and brilliant metaphor, sometimes applied to satiric ends as in his attack on English literary coteries The Georgiad 1931. Among his most successful work are translations from Baudelaire, Lorca, and St John of the Cross.
(1921-1967) British automobile and speedboat enthusiast, son of Malcolm Campbell, who simultaneously held the land-speed and water-speed records. In 1964 he set the world water-speed record of 444.57 kph/276.3 mph on Lake Dumbleyung, Australia, with the turbojet hydroplane Bluebird, and achieved the land-speed record of 648.7 kph/403.1 mph at Lake Eyre salt flats, Australia. He was killed in an attempt to raise his water-speed record on Coniston Water, England.
