Energy production, in the form of oil, natural gas, and strip-mined coal, has replaced precious metals and copper in mineral exploitation. The plains area still produces grain crops, sheep, and cattle.

Im W Hochgebirge der Rocky Mountains, im O Hügelland und Prärie: Das sehr dünn besiedelte M. ist trotz des reichen Bergbaus (v.a. Kupfer, daneben Platin, Nickel, Blei, Zink, Erdöl, u.a.) ein Agrarland (Getreide-Extensivbau, Mais, Zuckerrüben) mit Rinderhaltung und bedeutender Jagd (v.a. in den Hangwäldern). Erst Mitte des 18. Jh. wurde es von Weißen erreicht und 1889 der 41. Staat der USA; die indian. Restbevölkerung (noch ca. 38 000) lebt vorwiegend in 7 Reservaten.
