France's largest motor-vehicle manufacturer, founded 1898. In Nov 1994 the French government actioned plans to privatize the company, which had been nationalized from 1944.
Louis Renault (1877–1944) formed the company with his brothers Fernand and Marcel. In 1899 they began automobile racing, which boosted the sales of their automobiles, and by 1908 they were producing 5,000 automobiles a year. The company produced tanks for the French army in both world wars.
