Zodiacal constellation in the northern hemisphere between Pisces and Taurus, near Auriga, represented as the legendary ram whose golden fleece was sought by Jason and the Argonauts.
Its most distinctive feature is a curve of three stars of decreasing brightness. The brightest of these is Hamal or Alpha Arietis, 65 light-years from Earth.
The Sun passes through Aries from late April to mid-May. In astrology, the dates for Aries are between about 21 March and 19 April (see precession). The spring equinox once lay in Aries, but has now moved into Pisces through the effect of the Earth's precession (wobble).
dt. Hilfskreuzer (Schiff 21), als solcher am 30.11.1939 in Dienst gestellt und im Jan. 1940 von Korvettenkapitän v. Ruckteschell übernommen; 7,851 BRT, 152 m Länge, 18.2 m Breite, Höchstgeschwindigkeit 14 kn, 364 Mann Besatzung; Bewaffnung: 6x15 cm, 1x7.5 cm, 8 Rohre Flak, 4 Torpedorohre, 2 Bordflugzeuge Heinkel He 114. W. lief am 5.5.1940 zum Handelskrieg aus und erreichte nach einem Gefecht mit brit. U-Boot am 14.5. den Durchbruch durch die Dänemarkstraße. Bis zum 31.10.1940, als W. wieder in Brest einlief, wurden 10 Frachter, darunter das einzige von einem Hilfskreuzer angegriffene Segelschiff, mit 58,644 BRT versenkt. W. wurde später als Werkstattschiff in norweg. Gewässern eingesetzt, wo sie bei Kriegsende in brit. Hand fiel. Im Okt. 1955 strandete sie an der norweg. Küste, das Wrack wurde abgebrochen.
