vorübergehende Unterbrechung der Feindseligkeiten, oft wie die Waffenruhe mit einem bestimmten Zweck, meist aber mit der Absicht, den Krieg zu beenden.
ETYM French armistice, from (an assumed word) Latin armistitium; arma arms + stare, statum (combining form, -stitum), to stand still.
A state of peace agreed to between opponents so they can discuss peace terms; SYN. cease-fire, truce.
Cessation of hostilities while awaiting a peace settlement. “The Armistice” refers specifically to the end of World War I between Germany and the Allies 11 Nov 1918. On 22 June 1940 French representatives signed an armistice with Germany in the same railroad carriage at Compičgne as in 1918. No armistice was signed with either Germany or Japan 1945; both nations surrendered and there was no provision for the suspension of fighting. The Korean armistice, signed at Panmunjom 27 July 1953, terminated the Korean War 1950–53.
