(1919-1987) Italian novelist. He joined the anti-Fascist resistance during World War II, was captured, and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. He wrote of these experiences in Se questo č un uomo/If This Is a Man 1947. His other books, all based on his experience of the war, include Period Tables 1975 and Moments of Reprieve 1981.
