Blunt-nosed warm-water fish of the family Muglidae, found in the Atlantic and Pacific. The striped mullet Mugil cephalus, about 60 cm/2 ft long, is commonly netted and smoked. The name mullet is sometimes used for goatfishes, tropical reef fishes of the family Mullidae.
