Heronlike wading bird with booming call.
Any of several small herons, in particular the common bittern Botaurus stellaris of Europe and Asia. It is shy, stoutly built, has a streaked camouflage pattern and a loud, booming call. An inhabitant of marshy country, it is now quite rare in Britain.
