Swift timid long-eared mammal larger than a rabbit having a divided upper lip and long hind legs; young born furred and with open eyes.
Mammal of the genus Lepus of the family Leporidae (which also includes rabbits) in the order Lagomorpha. Hares are larger than rabbits, with very long, black-tipped ears, long hind legs, and short, upturned tails.
Throughout the long breeding season June–Aug, there are chases and “boxing matches” among males and females; the expression “mad as a March hare” arises from this behavior.
Unlike rabbits, hares do not burrow. Their furred, open-eyed young (leverets) are cared for in a shallow depression rather than a specially prepared nest cavity. Jack rabbits and snowshoe rabbits are actually hares.

(1947-) British dramatist and screenwriter, who co-founded the theater company Joint Stock 1974. His plays satirize the decadence of postwar Britain, and include Slag 1970, Teeth ’n’ Smiles 1975, Fanshen 1975 on revolutionary Chinese communism, Plenty 1978, and Pravda 1985 (with Howard Brenton) on Fleet Street journalism. A recent trilogy of plays looks critically at three aspects of the establishment in Britain: Racing Demon 1990 at the Church of England, Murmuring Judges 1991 at the legal system, and The Absence of War 1994. His screenplays include Wetherby and Plenty both 1985, Paris by Night 1988, and The Absence of War 1994. He has also published an autobiography Writing Left-Handed 1991.
