Any of several species of evergreen trailing shrub, genus Arctostaphylos, of the heath family, found on uplands and rocky places. Most bearberries are North American but A. uva-ursi is also found in Asia and Europe in northern mountainous regions. It bears small pink flowers in spring, followed by red berries that are edible but dry.
