A group of languages spoken by Native Americans of the Eastern Woodland zone S and E of Hudson Bay. Algonquian includes over 20 languages spoken by Native Americans of the NE coast as well as by the Cree, Arapaho, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Ójibwa, and Fox.1. A member of any North American Indian group speaking an Algonquian language, originally living in the subarctic regions of eastern Canada; many tribes migrated south between the Mississippi and the Atlantic coast; Also called: Algonquin.
