Tree or shrub of the genus Ilex, family Aquifoliaceae, generally with glossy, sharp-pointed leaves and red berries. American holly I. opaca of the E US is used for Christmas decorations. Leaves of the Brazilian holly I. paraguayensis are used to make the tea yerba maté.
