(1872-1950) French politician. He was converted to socialism by the Dreyfus affair 1899 and in 1936 became the first socialist prime minister of France. He was again premier for a few weeks 1938. Imprisoned under the Vichy government 1942 as a danger to French security, he was released by the Allies 1945. He again became premier for a few weeks 1946.
