(James) (1936-1968) Scottish-born automobile racing driver, one of the finest in the postwar era. He was twice world champion in 1963 and 1965.

(1895-1971) English anatomist and surgeon whose research made a major contribution to the understanding of the structural anatomy of the brain. By emphasizing the importance of relating structure to function, he had a profound influence on the teaching of anatomy.
Clark was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. He trained at St Thomas's Hospital, London, and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I. As principal medical officer in Sarawak, Borneo, he began research into the evolution of primitive primates. Clark returned to the UK 1923 tattooed on the shoulders with the insignia of the Sea Dyaks as a mark of their esteem. He became professor of anatomy first at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, then at St Thomas's, and 1934–62 at Oxford, where he created a new Department of Anatomy.
Clark's research was directed mainly toward the brain, and the relationship of the thalamus to the cerebral cortex. He also carried out studies of the hypothalamus. His work on the sensory (largely visual) projections of the brain remains the basis of contemporary knowledge of this aspect of neuroanatomy.
His publications include Morphological Aspects of the Hypothalamus 1938, The Tissues of the Body 1939, and History of the Primates 1949.

(1962-) Scottish avant-garde dancer. His bare-bottomed costumes and outlandish stage props have earned him as much celebrity as his innovative dance technique. A graduate of the Royal Ballet school, he formed his own company, the Michael Clark Dance Company, in the mid-1980s and became a leading figure in the British avant-garde dance scene. In 1991 he played Caliban in Peter Greenaway’s film Prospero’s Books. He premiered his Mmm... Modern Masterpiece 1992.

(Wayne) (1896-1984) US general in World War II. In 1942 he became Chief of Staff for ground forces, and deputy to General Eisenhower. He led a successful secret mission by submarine to get information in North Africa to prepare for the Allied invasion, and commanded the 5th Army in the invasion of Italy. He remained in this command until the end of the war when he took charge of the US occupation forces in Austria.
Clark, born in New York, fought in France in World War I and between the wars held various military appointments in the US. He was commander in chief of the United Nations forces in the Korean War 1952–53.

Lord Clark (1903-1983) English art historian. He was director of the National Gallery, London, 1934–45. His books include Leonardo da Vinci 1939, Landscape into Art 1949, and The Nude 1956, which he considered his best book.

Joe Charles (1939-) Canadian Progressive Conservative politician who became party leader 1976, and May 1979 defeated Pierre Trudeau at the polls to become the youngest prime minister in Canada's history. Following the rejection of his government's budget, he was defeated in a second election Feb 1980. He became secretary of state for external affairs (foreign minister) 1984 in the Mulroney government.

(1752-1818) American military leader and explorer. He was made commander of the Virginia frontier militia at the outbreak of the American Revolution 1775. During 1778–79 he led an attack on the Indian allies of the British to the W of the Ohio River and founded a settlement at the site of Louisville, Kentucky.
Born near Charlottesville, Virginia, Clark spent his early adult years surveying and exploring Kentucky. After the war he remained in the Northwest Territory as Indian commissioner, leading an attack on the Wabash 1786. After leaving office, he accepted commissions from the French and Spanish colonial authorities.

(Harold) (1941-1991) US rock and folk singer, songwriter, and guitarist, a founder member 1964–66 of the influential rock group the Byrds; he was a member of the New Christy Minstrels (a folk group) 1963–64, and later of Dillard and Clark, a bluegrass duo; he also recorded solo.

(Charles) (Hope) (1915-) Australian historian. He was first professor of Australian history at the Australian National University 1949–75. His writings, television appearances, outspoken political stance opposing, for example, the Vietnam War and his comments on Australian culture have made him a public figure. His 6-volume A History of Australia 1962–87 has attracted both intense admiration and criticism.
