(French) “deceives the eye”; type of painting exactly imitating reality, and of interior decoration producing an illusion of space, height, length, etc.
A painting rendered in such great detail as to deceive the viewer concerning its reality.
Painting that gives a convincing illusion of three-dimensional reality. As an artistic technique, it has been in common use in most stylistic periods in the West, originating in Classical Greek art.
