The center of Jewish national worship in both ancient and modern days. The Western or Wailing Wall is the surviving part of the western wall of the platform of the enclosure of the Temple. Solomon built the Temple c. 950 BC but it was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC. It was rebuilt in the late 6th century BC, restored by the Maccabees and later by Herod the Great, but destroyed by the Romans in AD 70. Since then, Jews have come here to pray, to mourn their dispersion and the loss of their homeland.
The Mosque of Omar now stands on the site. Under Jordanian rule Jews had no access, but Israel retook this part of the city during the 1967 war.
