1. A reference point to shoot at; SYN. mark.
2. An object set up for a marksman or archer to aim at; SYN. butt.
3. The location of the target that is to be hit; SYN. target area.

Loosely, the objective of a computer command or operation. Examples are a computer that is to run a program translated for its use, a “foreign” language (for another computer) into which a program is to be translated, or a group of people for whom a particular product is designed. In ms-dos usage, the target is often the disk referred to by prompts in a copy operation (for example, “insert target diskette”).
