The earliest style of rock and roll as it developed in the US South with a strong country (hillbilly) element. The typical rockabilly singer was young, white, male, working class, and recorded for the Sun label in Memphis; among them were Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins (1932– ). Many rockabilly performers later became country singers.
