Rifle which directs some of the explosion of the propellant cartridge backward, balancing the recoil due to the ejection of the projectile forward.
When correctly designed the result is a gun which does not recoil; this saves weight in the construction of the mounting. Their principal defect is short range and prominent backblast, both due to the propellant gases being ejected to the rear.
