A domesticated animal kept for companionship or amusement.
A pampered and usually spoiled child.
A person who is treated with unusual kindness or consideration; darling.
Animal kept for companionship and occasionally for status. Research suggests that interaction with a pet induces relaxation (slower heart rate and lower blood pressure). In 16th–17th century Europe, keeping animals in this way was thought suggestive of witchcraft.
A 1992 Australian study found that pet owners had lower cholesterol levels than non-pet owners with comparable lifestyles.
