(1856-1951) French general and right-wing politician. His defense of Verdun 1916 during World War I made him a national hero. In World War II he became head of state June 1940 and signed an armistice with Germany. Removing the seat of government to Vichy, a health resort in central France, he established an authoritarian regime which collaborated with the Germans. He was imprisoned after the war.
With the Allied invasion he was taken to Germany, but returned 1945 and was sentenced to death for treason, the sentence being commuted to life imprisonment.
