(Russian Lvov) Capital and industrial city of Lviv region, Ukraine; Industries include textiles, metals, and engineering. The university was founded 1661. Lviv was formerly a trade center on the Black Sea–Baltic route. Founded in the 13th century by a Galician prince (the name means “city of Leo” or “city of Lev”), it was Polish 1340–1772, Austrian 1772–1919, Polish 1919–39, and annexed by the USSR 1945. It was the site of violent nationalist demonstrations Oct 1989, prior to Ukraine gaining independence 1991.
