(Russian Lvov) Capital and industrial city of Lviv region, Ukraine; Industries include textiles, metals, and engineering. The university was founded 1661. Lviv was formerly a trade center on the Black SeaBaltic route. Founded in the 13th century by a Galician prince (the name means city of Leo or city of Lev), it was Polish 13401772, Austrian 17721919, Polish 191939, and annexed by the USSR 1945. It was the site of violent nationalist demonstrations Oct 1989, prior to Ukraine gaining independence 1991.
