Musical instrument similar to a harp; 21-string instrument of W African origin made from gourds, with a harplike sound. Traditionally played by griots (hereditary troubadours) of the old Mali empire to accompany praise songs and historical ballads, it was first incorporated into an electronically amplified band by Guinean Mory Kante (1950– ).
