1. inner part

In polyphonic music (see polyphony), the voices (independent parts) whose registers (instrumental or vocal ranges) are neither the highest nor lowest. In a four-voice choir, for example, the alto and tenor sing inner parts, their registers falling between the soprano and bass. In a string quartet usually the second violin and viola are inner parts between the first violin and cello.
