In a river, a deep steep-sided meander (bend) formed by the severe downward erosion of an existing meander. Such erosion is usually brought about by the rejuvenation of a river (for example, in response to a fall in sea level).
There are several incised meanders along the middle course of the river Wye, near Chepstow, Gwent.
