(1586-1647) British colonial religious leader in America. A Puritan, he opposed the religious leadership of Cambridge colony, and led a group of his followers westward to the Connecticut Valley, founding Hartford 1636. He became the de facto leader of the colony and in 1639 helped to formulate Connecticut's first constitution, the Fundamental Orders.
Born in England and educated as a minister at Cambridge, Hooker served at parishes in England before fleeing to Holland in 1630 because of his Puritan beliefs. In 1633 he emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, settling in Cambridge.

2. Hooker

muški rodlično ime

(1907-1984) English engineer responsible for the development of aircraft engines such as the Proteus turboprop 1957, Orpheus turbojet 1958, Pegasus vectored-thrust turbofan, Olympus turbojet, and RB-211 turbofan.
Hooker was born in Sheerness, Kent, and educated at Imperial College, London, and at Oxford. He spent his career at Rolls-Royce (from 1938) and the Bristol Airplane Company, which merged with Rolls-Royce 1966.
Hooker developed supercharged versions of the Merlin engine, which powered many Allied aircraft in World War II. In the 1940s he was responsible for the development of the Whittle W2B turbojet and the Derwent engines, two of which powered the plane that set a world speed record 1946.
The Pegasus vectored thrust engine is the power unit for the Harrier VSTOL (vertical/short takeoff and landing) combat aircraft.
The Olympus turbojet, eventually to power the supersonic Concorde airliner, started life in 1946. The design uses two independent compressors driven by two independent turbines, giving the engine high compression (important for fuel economy) and great adaptability.
The RB-211 turbofan was on its introduction the quietest and most economical in airline service, and has a modular design so that replacing parts is easier.

4. Hooker

muški rodlično ime

(1917-) US blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was one of the foremost blues musicians. His first record, ‘Boogie Chillen’ 1948, was a blues hit and his percussive guitar style made him popular with a rock audience from the 1950s. His albums include Urban Blues 1968 and Boom Boom 1992 (also the title of his 1962 song).
Hooker was born in Mississippi and learned from the delta folk-blues players before moving north and taking up the urban, electric style on early recordings like ‘Hobo Blues’ and ‘Crawlin’ King Snake’ (both 1949); however, he never entirely abandoned the acoustic guitar. His career benefited from both the vogue for folk music in the 1950s and the blues boom of the 1960s. Despite many collaborations with rock musicians, he has retained a traditional blues sound.
