Hoofed ruminant Lama guanacoe of the camel family, found in South America on pampas and mountain plateaus. It grows to 1.2 m/4 ft at the shoulder, with head and body about 1.5 m/5 ft long. It is sandy brown in color, with a blackish face, and has fine wool. It lives in small herds and is the ancestor of the domestic llama and alpaca. It is also related to the other wild member of the camel family, the vicuna.
