(1799-1854) Portuguese poet, novelist, and dramatist. As a liberal, in 1823 he was forced into 14 years of exile. His works, which he saw as a single-handed attempt to create a national literature, include the prose Viagens na Minha Terra/Travels in My Homeland 1843–46 and the tragedy Frei Luis de Sousa 1843.
