Force that pilots and astronauts experience when their craft accelerate or decelerate rapidly. One g is the ordinary pull of gravity.
Early astronauts were subjected to launch and reentry forces of up to six g or more; in the space shuttle, more than three g is experienced on liftoff. Pilots and astronauts wear g-suits that prevent their blood pooling too much under severe g-forces, which can lead to unconsciousness.
