1. cyanogen chloride


Toxic nerve gas of World War I. It acts on the nerve centers, particularly those controlling breathing, causing rapid paralysis and death.
It was introduced by the French Oct 1916 to replace hydrocyanic acid. At low concentrations it acts as a tear gas and lung irritant but prolonged exposure even at this level can be lethal due to lung damage.
