Značenje:

(1937-1995) English satirist and entertainer. With his partner Dudley Moore, he appeared in the revue Beyond the Fringe 1959–64. He opened London’s first satirical nightclub, the Establishment, 1960, and backed the satirical magazine Private Eye. Cook’s distinctive humor, best exemplified in the “Pete and Dud” routines with Moore, was as little restrained by any concern for political correctness as by good taste, and frequently tended toward a kind of verbal surrealism.
Cook was born in Torquay, Devon, and educated at Shrewsbury public school and Cambridge University, where his performing career began. With his remarkable talent for mimicry and verbal fantasy, Cook was one of the chief movers of the British satire movement of the early 1960s. The success of Beyond the Fringe, was consolidated in the television comedy series Not Only But Also with Moore, which ran 1965–73. As well as financing Private Eye (founded 1963), he remained a regular contributor and source of influence.
Although Cook and Moore often appeared together in films, the Hollywood stardom attained by Moore eluded Cook, allegedly to his chagrin. A heavy drinker and determinedly iconoclastic, he none the less had a penchant for the trappings of show-business success.
His films include The Wrong Box 1966, Bedazzled 1968, The Bed Sitting Room 1969, a parody of The Hound of the Baskervilles 1977, and Supergirl 1984.

Značenje:

(1728-1779) British naval explorer. After surveying the St Lawrence River in North America 1759, he made three voyages: 1768–71 to Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia; 1772–75 to the South Pacific; and 1776–79 to the South and North Pacific, attempting to find the Northwest Passage and charting the Siberian coast. He was killed in Hawaii.
In 1768 Cook was given command of an expedition to the South Pacific to witness Venus eclipsing the Sun. He sailed in the Endeavour with Joseph Banks and other scientists, reaching Tahiti in April 1769. He then sailed around New Zealand and made a de
tailed survey of the east coast of Australia, naming New South Wales and Botany Bay. He returned to England 12 June 1771.
Now a commander, Cook set out 1772 with the Resolution and Adventure to search for the southern continent. The location of Easter Island was determined, and the Marquesas and Tonga Islands plotted. He also went to New Caledonia and Norfolk Island. Cook returned 25 July 1775, having sailed 100,000 km/60,000 mi in three years.
On 25 June 1776, he began his third and last voyage with the Resolution and Discovery. On the way to New Zealand, he visited several of the Cook or Hervey Islands and revisited the Hawaiian or Sandwich Islands. The ships sighted the North American coast at latitude 45ş N and sailed north hoping to discover the Northwest Passage. He made a continuous survey as far as the Bering Strait, where the way was blocked by ice. Cook then surveyed the opposite coast of the strait (Siberia), and returned to Hawaii early 1779, where he was killed in a scuffle with islanders.
Cook was born in Marton, Yorkshire, and joined the navy 1755. His expeditions set new standards of survey work, cartography, hydrography, and other scientific research.
