1. civil engineering


The branch of engineering concerned with the design and construction of such public works as dams or bridges.
Branch of engineering that is concerned with the construction of roads, bridges, aqueducts, waterworks, tunnels, canals, irrigation works, and harbors.
The term is thought to have been used for the first time by British engineer John Smeaton in about 1750 to distinguish civilian from military engineering projects.
