ETYM Latin, keel.
Any of various keel-shaped structures or ridges such as that on the breastbone of a bird or that formed by the fused petals of a pea blossom.
Constellation of the southern hemisphere, represented as a ship's keel. Its brightest star is Canopus; it also contains Eta Carinae, a massive and highly luminous star embedded in a gas cloud, perhaps 8,000 light-years away. It has varied unpredictably in the past; some astronomers think it is likely to explode as a supernova within 10,000 years.
