(1906-1985) US actress. She was known for her dark, enigmatic beauty and for her roles in silent films such as A Girl in Every Port 1928 and Die Büchse der Pandora/Pandora’s Box and Das Tagebuch einer Verlorenen/The Diary of a Lost Girl, both 1929 and both directed by G W Pabst. At 25 she had appeared in 17 films. She retired from the screen 1938.
(1886-1963) US literary critic and biographer. His five-volume Makers and Finders: A History of the Writer in America, 1800–1915 1936–52 was an influential series of critical works on US literature. The first volume The Flowering of New England 1936 won a Pulitzer Prize.
An earlier work, America’s Coming-of-Age 1915, concerned the Puritan heritage and its effects on American literature. His other works include studies of Mark Twain, Henry James, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Adopted name of Melvin Kaminsky (1926-) US film director and comedian. He is known for madcap and slapstick verbal humor. He became well known with his record album The 2,000-Year-Old Man 1960. His films include The Producers 1968, Blazing Saddles 1974, Young Frankenstein 1975, History of the World Part I 1981, and To Be or Not to Be 1983.
