(1905-1989) US poet and novelist. He is the only author to have received a Pulitzer Prize for both prose and poetry. His work explored the moral problems of the South. His most important novel, All the King’s Men 1946 (Pulitzer Prize 1947), depicts the rise and fall of a back-country demagogue modeled on the career of Huey Long. He also won Pulitzer Prizes for Promises 1968 and Now and Then: Poems 1976–78. He was a senior figure of the New Criticism, and the first official US poet laureate 1986–88.
Born in Guthrie, Kentucky, and educated at Vanderbilt University, Warren received an MA degree from Berkeley 1927 and became a leading figure in the Southern literary revival. A faculty member at Vanderbilt 1931–34; Louisiana State University 1934–42; the University of Minnesota 1942–50; and Yale University 1950–56, 1961–73, Warren was a respected critic. Among his collections of poems is Brother to Dragons 1953.

(1741-1775) American colonial physician and revolutionary leader. Opposing British colonial rule in Massachusetts, he sent Paul Revere and William Dawes to warn the countryside of the approach of the British 1775. Appointed major general of the Massachusetts militia, he was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill 1775.

(1891-1974) US jurist and chief justice of the US Supreme Court 1953–69. He served as governor of California 1943–53. As chief justice, he presided over a moderately liberal court, taking a stand against racial discrimination and ruling that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. He headed the commission that investigated 1963–64 President Kennedy's assassination.
Born in Los Angeles, Warren graduated from the University of California at Berkeley 1914 and practiced law in the San Francisco area. He became active in the Republican party and in 1938 was appointed California’s attorney general, which paved the way for the governorship. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Eisenhower. His most important ruling was in Brown v Board of Education 1954, in which the Court unanimously ruled against segregation in public schools and made it illegal to classify races for discrimination purposes. The Warren Court oversaw the reapportionment by population of many election districts in cases such as Reynolds v Sims 1964. Other rulings involved individual rights, especially in criminal procedures, as in Miranda v Arizona 1966, which ruled in favor of a defendant being informed of his or her rights at the time of arrest. The Warren Commission 1963–64, appointed by President Johnson, reached the controversial conclusion that no conspiracy was involved in the assassination of President Kennedy. Warren retired from the Court 1969 and was succeeded by Warren Burger.
